Nigeria is leading the way in ethical and responsible mining practices, as the Ministry of Solid Mineral Development intensifies efforts to ensure environmental protection and community development.
Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of Mines and Environmental Compliance, has been at the forefront of this initiative, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to environmental regulations and social responsibility. “We are committed to building a sustainable future for Nigeria,” she told Voice of Nigeria in an interview at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. “This involves not only extracting valuable minerals but also safeguarding our environment and empowering our communities.” She stated.
To achieve this goal, the ministry has implemented several measures, including:
- Strict Enforcement of Environmental Regulations: The department conducts regular inspections to ensure compliance with environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and environmental protection and rehabilitation programs (EPRPs). Non-compliant companies face severe penalties, including suspension or revocation of mineral titles.
- Prioritizing Community Development: Mining companies are required to sign community development agreements (CDAs) to ensure that local communities benefit from mining operations. These agreements outline specific commitments to education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and job creation.
- Capacity Building and Awareness Raising: The ministry organizes workshops and training programs to educate stakeholders on environmental best practices and sustainable mining techniques. By empowering communities and industry professionals, the ministry aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility.
Dr. Okono highlighted a recent success story in Ogun State, where a mining company was compelled to fulfill its CDA commitment to build a 700-seat town hall for the local community. “This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to ensuring that mining benefits the people of Nigeria,” she said.
Despite challenges such as limited resources and manpower, the ministry remains steadfast in its mission. “We are determined to make a positive impact on the mining sector,” Dr. Okono affirmed. “By prioritizing environmental protection and social responsibility, we can create a sustainable future for generations to come.”
As Nigeria continues to harness its mineral wealth, the country is poised to become a global leader in ethical and responsible mining.
