Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Executive Council has approved a significant investment of N2.5 billion towards the acquisition of cutting-edge satellite technology, aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s fight against the pervasive issue of illegal mining. This strategic move, announced by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s mineral resources and ensuring sustainable mining practices.
“This is a pivotal moment in our efforts to sanitize the mining sector,” Minister Alake stated during a press briefing following the FEC meeting. “The approved N2.5 billion will be used to procure satellite technology that will provide us with real-time, visual monitoring of mining activities across the country. We will be able to track the volume of minerals extracted, monitor truck movements, and enhance the overall security of our mining sites.”
The Minister emphasized the critical role this technology will play in eliminating the opacity that has long plagued the sector. “For too long, illegal miners have operated in the shadows, exploiting our resources and depriving the nation of crucial revenue,” he explained. “With this new technology, we will bring transparency and accountability to the forefront. We will be able to see what is happening on the ground, enabling us to take swift and decisive action against illegal operators.”
Beyond technological advancements, the ministry is pursuing a multi-pronged approach to tackle illegal mining. “We are not just relying on technology,” Minister Alake clarified. “We are also actively engaging with artisanal miners, encouraging them to form cooperatives. We have seen significant success in this area, with over 300 cooperative societies already formed. This provides them with access to resources, training, and legal frameworks, enabling them to operate within the bounds of the law.”
Furthermore, the deployment of Mining Marshalls is a key component of the ministry’s strategy. “These Marshalls will be responsible for enforcing mining regulations and prosecuting illegal operators,” the Minister asserted. “We are sending a clear message: illegal mining will not be tolerated. We are committed to creating a level playing field for legitimate miners and ensuring that Nigeria’s mineral wealth benefits all its citizens.”
The government’s investment in satellite technology and the dual approach of encouraging cooperatives and deploying Mining Marshalls signal a renewed commitment to transforming Nigeria’s mining sector. The Minister concluded, “We are determined to create a sustainable and prosperous mining industry that contributes to the economic growth and development of our nation.”
