In a historic move that promises to revolutionize Nigeria’s mining sector, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the French Republic have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster collaboration in the solid minerals sector. This agreement, signed during President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to France, is set to unlock unprecedented opportunities for both nations.
The MoU focuses on developing critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements essential for clean energy technologies. By partnering with France, Nigeria aims to promote sustainable mining practices, reduce environmental impact, and diversify its mineral supply chains.
One of the most transformative aspects of this agreement is the commitment to remediate over 2,000 abandoned mining pits across Nigeria. This initiative not only addresses environmental degradation but also creates new job opportunities and improves the livelihoods of local communities.
Moreover, the collaboration includes co-financed extractive projects, research collaborations, and student exchanges between Franco-Nigerian institutions. This will facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills, ensuring Nigeria’s mining sector is equipped with the latest technologies and best practices.
Dr. Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister for Solid Minerals Development, emphasized that this partnership represents a strategic opportunity to attract French investors to Nigeria’s burgeoning mining sector. “By working closely with our French partners, we aim to unlock the sector’s full potential while prioritizing environmental stewardship and the welfare of local communities,” he stated.
This agreement is a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest to reposition its solid minerals sector for global competitiveness. It underscores a shared commitment to adopting international best practices, transparency, and inclusivity in project execution.
With this MoU, Nigeria and France are paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future, driven by innovation, collaboration, and a shared vision for a greener planet.
